Pitch #1: Rihanna’s Make Up line emphasizing the importance of representation.
Rihanna is a popular singer, however, she has also made headlines with her new make up line “Fenty Beauty”. This make up line dropped at a time in which other celebrities such as Kylie Jenner were making a killing with their own makeup. But what mad Rihanna’s different is that she made hers specific to all races, and specifically women of color. The world of social media such as Twitter and YouTube has also contributed to the fact that her makeup line highlights the importance of having black women in the beauty field because we are often left out and forgotten about when creating shades. For this story, I would love to highlight the importance of having representation in the beauty industry. I will talk to industry professionals such as women that work on Mac and Sephora and get there input on the importance of representation, what they think of “Fenty Beauty”, how some of their costumers are responding to the make up. This is specific to the DMV because DC is known for being the Chocolate city, meaning that there are a lot of black women in Washington DC. However, although there are a lot of black women the representation in make up is low at local beauty supply and make up shops. Often times when you go shopping in them you often don’t see make up that is geared towards us the people working do not look like us. Therefore, its important to get women’s opinion here on if they think representation matters in the industry. Furthermore, her make up line is selling out all around the world, and I can talk to women who have either bought the make up or plan to buy it. I also think this story will be interesting because we can discuss other make up lines to add a spend. Representation is an important, and I believe people watching will be informed and interested in why “Fenty Beauty” is so popular and important.
Pitch #2: National Anthem
National Anthem Outrage in Sports and People: One year ago Collin Kappernick made headlines about his silent protest against the National Anthem. At the beginning of each game Collin would kneel instead of stand, some people started to join in with him while others were outraged. One year later, Collin Kappernick who was known as one of the best Quarterback is not being signed to any team. Now all around the world, people are joining the protest and standing with Kappernick. The President of the United States, however, spoke out against Collins protest, which also led to people being more disappointed in the President. The local spin on this story will be talking to people on if they believe it’s okay for players to have freedom of speech and speak out against the national anthem. I can talk to coaches from other teams on If they allow their students to stand or if they allow their teams to exercise their rights and speak out. I can also talk with other people in the area about if they think this should as controversial as it has become.
Pitch #3: Women Do You Feel Safe?
I grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland and was a little shocked by the amount of men that will come up to me when I am walking to school or walking around DC. Now that I live off campus, but relatively close to campus I sometimes walk. However, there have been numerous times that I have been catcalled or even so far as approached while walking to school. A story that I would like to focus on is the safety of women in Washington DC. I will talk to women that live in DC as well as possible law enforcement on how often they have either been approached or if they hear stories about women constantly being attached or approached by other men. I believe this story is important because often times in the news you hear about women getting attacked for something so simple as not giving a stranger their number. Another angle I could go with this story is how are women suppose to respond when they are being approached, should they immediately scream for help or doing, they act friendly because they may not know if that man is sane or not. Although Washington D.C. isn’t extremely big it is still considered a city and its important for women watching to understand what their community is doing to help women feel safer. By talking to Police men and people that work in self defense, I will provide my audience with that information. This also can touch on a local and national issue because although I have focused on Washington DC safety is an issue that can impact any community.
