Practicum Assignments: Journal Entries

Journalist Entry #6

This will be my last journal entry because my internship with Offscript is slowly coming to an end. However, I just offered the opportunity to continue my internship with the company but go back into my field of entertainment. I will be working as an intern for Great Day Washington, which is a lifestyle and entertainment show. I am excited to be able to go back into my passion and help take my skills that I acquired from Offscript and use them for the show. Off-script has truly stretched me in ways that I was not aware I could be stretched. Often times I doubt myself, but I was forced to speak for myself and show everyone that I am the voice that needs to be heard. Bruce Johnson has taught me so much and has truly taken the time to help me grow as a journalist and this is something I can never quite repay him for. Although I won’t officially be with off-script I am still going to take time to contribute my ideas to the show, so that I can continue to grow in both capacities.

Journal Entry #5

As my internship will be finishing up in the next few weeks, I was finally able to meet some of the other summers interns at Tegna and get a fill for who they are. I was surprised to see that there are only a few African Americans. Howard can sometimes surprise you because you often get so used to being surrounded by so many people of your color that you forget that we are the minority. However, I was still able to meet the other interns and I feel so honor to have been given the opportunity to work for the company. Some of the other interns attend Ivy Leagues, interned at other notable companies and I truly felt like I was surrounded by the cream of the crop. This only reminded me that everything I do is not controlled by me but at the end of the day is controlled by God. So I must take in every opportunity and continue to build my skills as a journalist.

Journal Entry #4

My internship consists of a very small team of only about 5 people. That is the anchor(Bruce Johnson, Associate Producer, Senior Producer, Executive producer, and me. The two associate producer and senior producers now have left due to getting other job offers. Since they have left, I made a promise to myself to really step up so that I can continue being an asset to the show. Therefore, I have been pitching ideas, producing, editing content, skype interviewing, and writing more for the show. Although I miss both of the producers a lot, I am so very thankful for them teaching me these skills before they left because I think I am becoming a stronger multimedia journalist. I have been able to see a lot of my stuff air more on television and there is nothing more exciting than seeing something that you created to air on TV right in front of you!! This has truly been an amazing experience.

Journal Entry #3

These past two weeks, I have continued developing my skills as a writer. But you can also add to the skill list that I am becoming proficient at editing on this new software called “Edius”. Edius is an editing software that is used in most newsrooms. For the past few weeks, I have been asking to be trained on the software, but the editors have been swept. So one day when I wasn’t doing much I decided that I teach myself how to edit, and it turns out the software is very similar to premiere, imovie, and final cut. Not only have I developed my skills as an editor but I have actually edit products that are being put on air!! How many people can say that they have content that is airing on one of the biggest markets while they are still in college?! If anything, these past two weeks have taught me to always learn new skills they will come in handy.

Journal Entry #2

These past two weeks, were not nearly as action-packed. However, I did spend a lot of my time at the internship trying to develop my skills as a writer. When it comes to journalism, it’s important to not only be someone with a pretty face but someone that can actually write. So I took time when I wasn’t out in the field to actually write articles for the site and guess what?! My stuff was actually published. I also pitched the idea to discuss Jay Z, latest album in which I not only got to write a review, but be interviewed during a special facebook live segment with Bruce Johnson. We got over 8,000 views and counting. Bruce has really been trusting me when it comes to his show and getting him to step out of his comfort zone and discuss not only politics but my favorite pop culture. This week, taught me that its okay to pitch ideas because although you may get turned down, one might actually get picked up and people will love it!

Journal Entry #1

These past two weeks at WUSA9 have been busy. My very first day on the job, I booked a live band to perform in the studio. This quickly started the reputation of being the girl “booked a band on her first day”. Everyone was thoroughly impressed, and this also means that I have to live up to these high standards. The very next day, I actually got to go out in the field due to the shooting at the Congressional Baseball practice. I got to follow Bruce, and see him report live from where the shooting took place. Not only did I witness Bruce out in the field, I had to serve as a field reporter and run around trying to get interviews so that Bruce can actually speak to witnesses. This at first was nerve-wracking because people kept telling me no, however instead of getting discouraged I kept asking people and I was able to get 3 bystanders on air. These first two days, although action-packed definitely reminded me why I love this field.
