Landing a Job in TV

Every year, Howard University holds the annual School of Communication Job Fair. But instead of just having a job fair for the students, Howard, of course, goes the extra mile and has panels that are focused on certain career fields that students might be interested in. One of my favorite panels is “Landing a Job in TV”. This panel is hosted by Howard University professor and former CNBC senior Producer Dr. Somani who asks the questions that many students may have in regards to be in the news business. Furthermore, the panel features a variety of professionals from anchors to producers that give us a spill on the industry.

One important topic that they discussed, is learning everything. They stressed the importance of making sure you know what you want to do, but taking the time to make sure you are well rounded and learning all the skills around you. Furthermore, often times you WILL be the only black women in your team. Which means that you will struggle to have your voice heard but you have to make sure that you break that glass and let your voice be heard. But by breaking the glass, you also do not want to overstep your boundaries. Therefore, you have to make sure that you work hard and let your work speak for yourself. Never give them a reason to doubt you or belittle you even more. For example, when Jennifer Thomas started in her career she was the youngest, female, and the only woman of color. But she made sure that when it came to her work they could never say anything bad about it.

Another important lesson was discussed by Chris Lawrence who talked the importance of being a reporter and anchor. He mentioned that this industry is not easy and you will be working under deadlines. But you have to make sure that when completing these stories that you tell the complete story and DO NOT MAKE IT UP. Be sure that you know how to include the important elements of the story because for news you can not have it all.

All in all, this panel was very interesting and students walked away with more information on the industry. I was able to talk with a few students about what they thought and most were excited about this panel because it was very a candid conversation on the industry. Others were excited to be able to talk with those in this career field about next steps and passed out their resumes and business cards at the end of the panel in hopes of securing an internship. As always Howard University school of communication created a great platform for students to continue to learn and find their mark in the Television Industry.
