In the film “The Long Walk” it tells the journey of the walk that used to be from Fine Arts to Douglas Hall. That walk was met by a long row of trees that graduating seniors walk-on during commencement day. If you look online at older pictures of the university you will see professionals from the past graduations. Although the trees are now gone, the walkway still remains. For years, I would take this walk, but I didn’t realize the importance of this journey until I actually saw the movie and realized the historical importance of it all.
The long walk was described in the movie as the progression of our people in this country. We started from the below the totem pole however, we did not stay there. Instead, we have contributed so much to this country. Furthermore, Howard University students and alum have contributed so much and those same people took the long walk that I take every day.
Since I was a little girl I dreamed of attending Howard University. Howard University is the alma mater of both of my brothers, as well as the careers of both of my parents. Since I was a little girl my parents instilled in me the importance of my skin color and being confident in myself.
Another important lesson they taught me was to attend an HBCU. My father was a product of an HBCU(Morehouse) and my mother was not. However, they both told us growing up that no one will love you and take care of you like an HBCU will. In this world, we will constantly face people against us. But building that tough exterior and truly learning your race and culture is needed before you step out into this warzone we call earth. It was these many conversations that got me excited to attend Howard University.
When I finally got my opportunity to be an official student in August 2014, it was an emotional and unbelievable time. I made a promise to myself, that I would leave my mark on this campus and take advantage of every opportunity. Although there are hard times in the A building and professors may stress me out I am so very thankful for my Howard University education. I am so thankful to be surrounded by so many people that are working just as hard as me to be the best representation of themselves.
After watching the long walk, it only reminds me about how long my journey has been with Howard. From visiting my father’s office as a little girl, walking with him to class, attending freshman orientation, pinning, fashion shows, yard fest, crossing as a lady of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated., and soon to be graduating. I am so very thankful for this long journey, Howard has clearly shaped the women that I am becoming and I am so excited to truly take in every moment before I officially take my last walk as a student.
